This City & Guilds course is designed to meet the national occupational standards for planning, managing, and reviewing legislative and safety compliance for confined space work across various industries, including both water and non-water sectors.

Aims & Objectives


Water Industry Applications Include:
Potable water operations, sewage treatment processes, drain and sewer cleaning. Plus, any confined space work in proximity to water or prone to surface water flooding.

Non-Water Industry Applications Include: Pharmaceutical, petrochemical, asbestos removal, vehicle manufacturing and servicing, aeronautical, construction, communications, power and utilities, gas and electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mining, quarrying, and tunnelling operations.

Course Agenda

The training combines classroom-based tutorials with practical assignments that delegates must complete post-course. The detailed agenda includes:

  • Planning the Management of Work Confined Spaces: Define the confined space classification for the work activity.
  • Managing Confined Space Teams: Leadership skills for overseeing teams working in confined spaces.
  • Legislation and Compliance: Recording and reviewing relevant legislative requirements including Risk Assessments, Method Statements and Permits to Work.
  • Procedures Development: Creating, monitoring, and verifying procedures for confined space work.
  • Health and Safety Compliance: Understanding the necessary environmental, legislative, and health and safety requirements.
  • Organisational Requirements: Knowledge of organisational protocols for confined space work.
  • Equipment Proficiency: Understanding the use of plant, tools, and equipment specific to confined space operations.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Developing and understanding emergency arrangements and rescue plans.
  • Assessments: Completion of both written assessments and a portfolio of evidence

Course Duration and Requirements

This intensive four-day course requires additional portfolio work and is tailored for managers responsible for the organisation, planning, and management of confined space work. It covers legal compliance, safety procedures, documentation preparation, and emergency planning.

Prerequisites:

Participants must possess relevant knowledge and experience, alongside one of the following qualifications:

  • NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
  • NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
  • City & Guilds Level 6 Occupational Health and Safety
  • NCRQ Level 6 Certificate in Applied Health and Safety
  • NVQ Level 5 or Level 6 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice

Enrolment Requirements:

Delegates must present certified copies of their qualification certificates during booking and bring a laptop equipped with MS Word to the course.
