Aims & Objectives


Water Industry Applications Include:
Potable water operations, sewage treatment processes, drain and sewer cleaning, confined spaces prone to surface water flooding.

Non-Water Industry Applications Include: Pharmaceutical, petrochemical, asbestos removal, vehicle manufacturing and servicing, aeronautical, construction, communications, power and utilities, gas and electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mining, quarrying, and tunnelling operations.

Course Agenda

The training includes a mix of classroom-based tutorials and practical assignments, with assessments conducted through both theoretical and practical tests. The detailed agenda includes:

  • Working Safely in Medium Risk Confined Spaces: Interpret a work plan, check all equipment and obtain authorisation for entry.
  • Enter and Exit Safely: Check atmospheric conditions and PPE. Enter and exit the space in line with procedures. Identify unsafe activity and resolve problems.
  • Work Safely and Monitor the Work Team: Follow safe working procedures by using tools correctly and controlling access of people, equipment and vehicles.   
  • Deal with Emergency Situations: Confirm emergency arrangements and commence emergency procedures.
  • Understand Principles of Working: Describe hazards and situations associated with different types of confined spaces. Identify different types of emergency situations and describe different roles of a confined space team when dealing with emergencies.
  • Understanding Standard Protocols: Knowledge of standard protocols such as, Identifying categories of Water OGN classification scheme, risk weighting factors and reporting systems.
  • Understanding Entry Controller Duties and Responsibilities: Including pre-entry briefing, advantages and disadvantages of ventilation systems and documentation used.
  • Understanding equipment checks and Inspection: Checking equipment, identifying defects and actions for dealing with faulty equipment.
  • Assessments: Practical observation.

Course Duration and Requirements

his two-day course is designed for the entry controller/top person who controls
entry and arrangements for medium risk confined spaces and works within them.
It includes the duties of an entry controller, pre-entry procedures, preparing to work safely, using equipment and tools safely, entry into and exit from the medium risk confined space, maintaining communications, and initiating and following emergency arrangements.

Prerequisites:

Participants must possess relevant knowledge and
experience, alongside one of the following qualifications:

  • Minimum age of 18
  • Medically fit to wear a breathing apparatus and enter confined spaces (proof required).
  • No conditions affecting eyesight or hearing, heart disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy, fear of heights or confined spaces, vertigo, balance issues, impaired limb function, alcohol or drug dependence, or psychiatric illness
  • Given the critical nature of confined space work and the importance of clear communication, all practical and theoretical assessments are conducted in English. Delegates must inform the training team in advance if training on a “Mask Style Escape Set (PP10/PP15)” is required, as standard training uses the Hooded Style Escape Set (CF10/CF15).

Enrolment Requirements:

Due to the critical nature of confined space work and the importance of clear communication, assessments are conducted in English, with no provision
for interpreters.

Certification

A Level 2 Award in entrant and entry controller for confined spaces (medium risk) (6160-09) certificate will be issued.
