This City & Guilds course is designed to meet the national occupational standards for anyone who works as part of a rescue and recovery team in confined spaces. The course applies to both water and non-water industry sectors.

Aims & Objectives


Water Industry Applications Include:
Potable water operations, sewage treatment processes, drain and sewer cleaning, confined spaces prone to surface water flooding.

Non-Water Industry Applications Include: Pharmaceutical, petrochemical, asbestos removal, vehicle manufacturing and servicing, aeronautical, construction, communications, power and utilities, gas and electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mining, quarrying, and tunnelling operations.

Course Agenda

The training comprises a mix of classroom-based tutorials and practical assignments, with assessments conducted through both theoretical and practical tests. The detailed agenda includes:

  • Safety Checks for Entry and Rescue Teams: Overseeing safety checks and risk assessments before commencing work.
  • Rescue and Recovery Team Operations: Entering and exiting confined spaces safely as part of a rescue and recovery team.
  • Rescue Equipment and Tools: Checking and understanding the use of rescue equipment and tools.
  • Team Procedures: Following procedures and working safely as a member of a rescue and recovery team.
  • Principles of Rescue and Recovery Teamwork: Core principles and best practices, such as explaining common cause of emergency, job roles and responsibilities.
  • Standard Protocols for Rescue Teams: Understanding and adhering to standard operating procedures and methods for rescue teams. Explaining ways of reducing risk and reporting systems.
  • Assessments: Practical and written evaluations to ensure competency.

Course Duration and Requirements

This three-day course is suitable for individuals working or preparing to work as part of a rescue and recovery team in confined spaces. It covers essential safety preparations, safe entry and exit practices, emergency response activities, use of emergency equipment, team procedures and casualty recovery and handling.

Prerequisites:

Participants must meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum age of 18
  • Clean-shaven (for breathing apparatus)
  • Medically fit to wear a breathing apparatus and enter confined spaces (proof required).
  • Must hold a High Risk Confined Space Certificate.
  • No conditions affecting eyesight, hearing, heart, blood pressure, epilepsy, fear of heights or confined spaces, vertigo, balance issues, limb function, alcohol or drug dependence, or psychiatric illness.

Enrolment Requirements:

Due to the critical nature of confined space work and the importance of clear communication, assessments are conducted in English, with no provision for interpreters.

Certification

A Level 3 Award in Working as a Member of a Rescue and Recovery Team in Confined Spaces (6160-08) certificate will be issued.
