This City & Guilds course is designed to meet the national occupational standards for high-risk confined space work and the management of safe entry and operations in such environments. It encompasses both water and non-water industry applications and covers entry into NC4 category confined spaces, ensuring comprehensive training for varied operational environments.

Aims & Objectives


Water Industry Applications Include:
Potable water operations, sewage treatment processes, drain and sewer cleaning, confined spaces prone to surface water flooding.

Non-Water Industry Applications Include: Pharmaceutical, petrochemical, asbestos removal, vehicle manufacturing and servicing, aeronautical, construction, communications, power and utilities, gas and electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mining, quarrying, and tunnelling operations

Course Agenda

The training includes a blend of classroom-based tutorials and practical assignments, with assessments conducted through both theory and practical tests. The detailed agenda includes:

  • Preparing to Work Safely in High Risk Confined Spaces: Including, safety zones, communication, equipment and PPE.
  • Entering and Exiting High Risk Confined Spaces: Safe procedures for entry and exit, including checking equipment, obtaining authorisation, resolving problems and identifying unsafe activity.
  • Equipment and Tools: Pre-use and post-use checks and testing (e.g., gas detectors, escape sets, breathing apparatus).
  • Safe Systems of Work: Implementation of safety protocols, including selecting communication methods, monitoring and responding to conditions and completing documents and reports.
  • Emergency Management: Handling and controlling emergencies including initiating emergency exit procedures.
  • Principles of High Risk Confined Space Work: Core principles and best practices including, health and safety, environmental legislation regulations, guidance and emergency response.
  • Standard Protocols: Understanding and classifying procedures, communication methods and reporting systems.
  • Team Procedures: Implementing procedures for confined space teams.

Course Duration and Requirements

This three-day course is designed for individuals currently working or preparing to work in high-risk environments. The curriculum encompasses essential safety preparations, safe entry and exit techniques for high-risk confined spaces, proper use of equipment and tools, adherence to safety procedures, and emergency management.

Prerequisites:

Participants must meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum age of 18
  • Clean-shaven (for breathing apparatus)
  • Medically fit to wear breathing apparatus and enter confined spaces (proof required).
  • No conditions affecting eyesight, hearing, heart, blood pressure, epilepsy, fear of heights or confined spaces, vertigo, balance issues, limb function, alcohol or drug dependence, or psychiatric illness.

Enrolment Requirements:

Due to the critical nature of confined space work and the emphasis on communication, assessments are conducted in English, with no provision
for interpreters. Delegates must inform the training team in advance if training on a “Mask Style Escape Set (PP10/PP15)” is required, as standard training uses the Hooded Style Escape Set (CF10/CF15).

Certification
