This City & Guilds course is designed to meet the national occupational standards for directing emergency rescue and recovery operations for casualties in confined spaces. The course applies to both water and non-water industry sectors.

Aims & Objectives


Water Industry Applications Include:
Potable water operations, sewage treatment processes, drain and sewer cleaning, confined spaces prone to surface water flooding.

Non-Water Industry Applications Include:

Pharmaceutical, petrochemical, asbestos removal, vehicle manufacturing and servicing, aeronautical, construction, communications, power and utilities, gas and electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mining, quarrying, and tunnelling operations.

Course Agenda

The training includes a mix of classroom-based tutorials and practical assignments, with assessments conducted through both theoretical and practical tests. The detailed agenda includes:

  • Planning and Preparing Emergency Operations:
    Ensure all safety, escape and emergency equipment is on site before work commences. Test emergency communication systems.
  • Mobilising a Rescue Team: Carry out live point of work risk assessment and direct entry and exit operations in confined spaces.
  • Monitoring Rescue Teams: Ensuring compliance to procedures during rescue operations. Set up and maintain areas in line with legislative procedures for post-incident investigation.
  • Principles of Rescue Team Leadership: Core principles and best practices for leading a rescue team, such as risk assessments, handling emergency situations, decontamination procedures and disposal.
  • Rescue Team Leader Duties: Understanding the responsibilities and duties of a rescue team leader such as reporting systems, key requirement of safe entry and exit and developing a command handover brief.
  • Assessments: Practical and written evaluations to ensure competency.

Course Duration and Requirements

This one-day course is suitable for individuals who direct or are preparing to
direct rescue or recovery team activities in confined spaces. It is ideal for rescue
team leaders, coordinators, entry controllers, top persons, or supervisors involved
in rescue and recovery operations, planning emergency procedures, mobilising
rescue teams, directing and monitoring activities, and securing sites post-incident.

Prerequisites:

For those supervising rescue and recovery teams, it is required to also hold the City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Working as a Member of a Rescue and Recovery Team in Confined Spaces (6160-08) or an equivalent qualification. Equivalent qualifications must meet current National Occupational Standards and be confirmed by the City & Guilds Quality Team.

Enrolment Requirements:

Due to the critical nature of confined space work and the importance of
clear communication, assessments are conducted in English, with no
provision for interpreters.

Certification

A Level 3 Award in Direct Emergency Rescue and Recovery of Casualties from Confined Spaces (6160-07) certificate will be issued.
